Marie A. Sorge, 98, of West Union, died Tuesday, February 17, 2015, at the Good Samaritan Home in West Union.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 20, 2015, at St. John Lutheran Church in Sumner with Rev. Susan Friedrich officiating. Interment will follow at St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Sumner. Friends may call from 1:00 p.m. to service time at the church on Friday. Memorials may be made in her name to the St. John Lutheran Church Parish Hall Fund. Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner is assisting the family.
Marie Alma, daughter of Peter and Ida (Pries) Lang was born February 14, 1917, near Sumner in rural Fayette County, Iowa. She was baptized on March 3, 1917, and confirmed March 29, 1931, at St John Lutheran Church in Sumner. Marie married Wesley Sorge on March 5, 1944. They worked side by side on the farm. Marie raised chickens and geese, and also had a large garden. In 1974, Marie moved to West Union. She enjoyed embroidering, crocheting, quilting, and spending time with her grandchildren. Due to failing health, she became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in West Union in 2007. While she was there, Marie truly enjoyed all the visits with her sister, Ruth.
Marie is survived by her children, Don Buhr of Cresco and Ann (Dave) Oakland of West Union; two grandchildren, Lynn (Kevin) Helgerson and Chad (Rhonda) Oakland; two great-grandchildren Silvia Oakland and Andrew Helgerson.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, who died in 1972; a daughter-in-law Joan Buhr; four brothers, Art, Carl, Raymond, and Martin Lang; one sister, Ruth Gould; and a nephew, Tim Gould.
